Community Buzz at Gyle: Bees, Bagpipes, and Benevolence

Back to Stories

Gyle Shopping Centre has been buzzing with activity and community spirit, thanks to a series of exciting events and initiatives. Here’s a look at what’s been happening at Gyle:

Edinburgh Honey at Gyle

We are thrilled to welcome Edinburgh Honey to our mall. They now have a dedicated space to sell their delightful honey pots, some of which are made right here at the hives in Gyle. With the change in weather, we’re excited to announce that 10 hives will be returning to Gyle, ensuring a fresh supply of local honey. Stay tuned for our upcoming Bee Awareness Day, where you can learn more about these fascinating pollinators and their crucial role in our ecosystem.

Christine Jardine MP Engages with Shoppers

Christine Jardine MP brought her monthly table to Gyle, engaging with shoppers outside M&S. Her presence provided an opportunity for the community to discuss local issues and connect directly with their representative.

Community Support from Police Scotland

January can be a tough month, and Police Scotland community officers were on hand at Gyle to check in on shoppers and ensure everyone was feeling safe and supported. Their presence was a comforting reminder of the strong community ties we have here.

Bagpipes for a Cause

The Balerno & District Schools Pipe Band brought a touch of Scottish tradition to Gyle around Burns Day. Joshua, Myrna, and Harrison piped beautifully outside the Starbucks end for an hour, raising £87.31 towards their Music Enterprise Award. Their performance added a festive and cultural flair to the mall, delighting shoppers and passersby.

Forth and Tay Disabled Ramblers Preloved Book Stall

For the first time, Forth and Tay Disabled Ramblers set up a preloved books stall in the mall and received high praise for their efforts. They raised an impressive £349.00 for their group, thanks to the generosity of our shoppers and the hard work of Gyle staff.

Clothing Banks for Charity

Two clothing banks made significant contributions to local charities:

  • The Edinburgh Children’s Hospital clothing bank was emptied, resulting in 8.072 tonnes of clothing and £2,421.00 raised for the charity.
  • The Cash for Kids clothing bank collected 5.968 tonnes of clothing, raising £1,790.40 for the charity.

Scottish Adoption and Fostering Awareness Day

We were proud to host Scottish Adoption and Fostering for an awareness day at Gyle. This event aimed to encourage more people to consider fostering and adoption, addressing the urgent need for caring homes for children.

Looking Ahead

Gyle Shopping Centre remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant and supportive community. From supporting local businesses and charitable causes to hosting engaging events, we strive to make Gyle a place where everyone feels welcome and connected.

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported these events. Stay tuned for more exciting happenings at Gyle, and let’s continue to make our community a thriving and caring place for all.
